This website is fascinating.  Want to know how much carbon your yearly facebook or skype usage produces? Look around here.

Sustainability on campus

Assumption #1

Being typical college students, we generally think that our activities, schoolwork, and social lives take precedence over everything else.  In other words, we only care about ourselves, and the short term consequences of our actions.

Reality-or at least, my opinion

This may not be true for as many students as we think.  I’m here to prove that we do care about the environment and see the need to live more sustainably.

Colleges and universities are taking steps to live in a more sustainable manner.  We’re seeing bans on the sale of plastic water bottles, more composting, and major increases in environmental studies enrollment.

In a recent survey I have taken of college students, many reported interest in learning more about sustainability.  Almost 69% of these students I polled showed interest in reducing their paper towel usage.  If this could be done on Ithaca College’s campus alone, almost $14,000 dollars annually could be saved by not refilling paper towel dispensers in the quads (Paper Towel Use Reduction).  Imagine how this could help the college’s budget it tight economic times!
